Christmas lights on Gilham Rd.
Do you remember the dad from A Christmas Story, who had vicious battles with the furnace in the basement? I think I’ve discovered his current residence, and it happens to be on Gilham and Sally.
I can just see Father hunched on the sidewalk in his work clothes, cursing as he twists a clump of sparking wires in an attempt to sync the lights with the music. As his fingers get blacker, his shouting grows louder and louder until Mother has to cover little Ralphie’s ears.
The Gilham house won the prize for most elaborate (i.e. most certifiably nutso) display on my family’s annual Christmas light drive. The music you hear on our radio is broadcast from the house itself, which will probably lead to a car wreck but was pretty magical at the time.
I can’t imagine how long it took to make the lights dance to six Christmas songs, or how many times the technician had to listen to “Feliz Navidad.” The only thing lacking was an unconventional song choice. Don’t you wish they would’ve thrown Kanye West’s “All Of The Lights” into the mix?
Happy holidays everyone!
p.s. The video was shot on my iPhone with this sweet little app called Super8.
